What is it?
In essence, the “magic” contained in an amber teething necklace is called succinic acid. It is actually hardened “resin” and not a stone as many people think. The acid contained in the beads is a natural anti-inflammatory and releases pain relieving properties when exposed to heat i.e. worn against the skin in the form of a necklace or bracelet. When exposed to the skin and warmed, the amber releases small amounts of trace oils that enter into the skin and absorb into the bloodstream and are known to relieve teething pain, colic, fussiness, and benefit the immune system due to their analgesic properties. Amber has also been used in the past to ward off arthritic pain and had been used in Europe for many years for teething pain as well as diaper rash, inflammation, irritability, excessive drooling, and general discomfort.
Is it safe?
When searching for an appropriate amber necklace, quality is important. A well made necklace will have each bead knotted before and after so if one bead dislodges, the whole necklace will not fall apart. You must always supervise your child while wearing the necklace in case of choking risk, and manufactures do not recommend sending your child to bed while wearing it. It is also important to invest in a genuine Baltic necklace containing real succinic acid. There are several “knock off” version floating around the internet which will do no more than act as a fashion accessory. Do your research and invest in a quality necklace. Momma Goose is a company that makes organic genuine Baltic teething necklaces and products and was started by a mom right in North America to provide quality products for her own children using all natural ingredients and products.
Do they chew it?
No, the child does not chew the necklace but rather wears the beads against the skin. When exposed to body heat, the beads will warm up and release their anti-inflammatory properties into the body.
How do I look after it?
Best practices suggest all you need to look after the necklace is a damp cloth and water to wipe it clean. You should also avoid letting your child swim in a Chlorine pool while wearing the necklace, although regular water such as in the bath or shower will not damage the necklace. If looked after, the amber will last for several years from babyhood up until toddler age. You may notice that the various amber necklaces are all unique and come in different colors. This is due to the unique individual properties of the naturally occurring amber and makes no difference in the quality of the necklace.
